Welcome to Estranged Parents

Estranged Parents is a UK-wide peer-support community for parents who are estranged from an adult son or daughter.

The forum exists to provide a safe, thoughtful place to talk about the experience of estrangement, share practical ideas, learn from other parents and find useful information and support.

What kind of community is this?

We want Estranged Parents to be supportive without becoming an echo chamber.

Members are welcome to talk openly about grief, anger, confusion, rejection, attempts at reconciliation and the practical consequences of estrangement. At the same time, we do not assume that parents are always right or that adult children are always wrong.

Different families have different histories. Members may sometimes be encouraged to consider another point of view, particularly where that may help them understand what has happened or think more clearly about what to do next.

Who is the forum for?

The community is primarily for mothers and fathers who are estranged from adult children.

You may be newly estranged, have been living with estrangement for many years, have occasional contact, be trying to rebuild a relationship, or have reached the point where you are concentrating on rebuilding your own life.

There is no requirement to be seeking reconciliation.

You do not have to tell your whole story

When you join, you are welcome to introduce yourself, but there is no pressure to disclose more than you are comfortable sharing.

Many members will understandably want to protect their privacy. We strongly recommend using a pseudonymous username and avoiding names, addresses, workplaces or other details that could identify you or members of your family.

A good place to begin

If you are new to the forum, the other topics in this Start Here section explain:
  • how to register and activate your account;
  • how to find your way around the forum;
  • how to make your first post;
  • our community rules;
  • privacy and staying anonymous;
  • how moderation works.
You do not need to read everything before taking part, but please familiarise yourself with the Community Rules.

Most importantly

Estrangement can be an isolating experience. You are not required to have the answers before joining in.

Read for a while if you prefer, introduce yourself when you feel ready, and take part at your own pace.

Welcome.
