Community Rules

Estranged Parents exists to provide a thoughtful, supportive place for parents who are estranged from an adult son or daughter.

We want members to feel able to speak openly about difficult experiences without the forum becoming hostile, judgmental or one-sided.

1. Treat other members with respect

Disagreement is allowed. Personal attacks, insults, ridicule, intimidation and deliberate provocation are not.

Challenge ideas and interpretations rather than attacking the person posting them.

2. Do not assume that one side is automatically right

This is a support community for parents, but it is not an echo chamber.

Members may sometimes be encouraged to consider how a situation could look from another perspective. That does not mean dismissing parental grief or excusing harmful behaviour.

3. Protect privacy

Do not publish identifying information about yourself, your adult child or anyone else unless there is a very good reason to do so.

Avoid real names, addresses, workplaces, schools, phone numbers, email addresses and other details that could make someone identifiable.

Do not post private correspondence, screenshots or photographs that reveal personal information without careful redaction.

4. Do not harass or pursue other members

Do not repeatedly contact someone who has asked you to stop.

Do not use private messages to continue an argument, pressure another member or behave in a way that would not be acceptable publicly on the forum.

5. No hate speech or discrimination

Posts attacking people because of characteristics such as sex, race, nationality, religion, disability or sexual orientation are not acceptable.

6. No campaigning against identifiable family members

The forum is a place to discuss your own experience, not to organise harassment, public exposure or retaliation against an adult child, former partner or anyone else.

7. Be careful with advice

You are welcome to share what has helped you, but please avoid presenting personal experience as professional medical, legal or psychological advice.

Where appropriate, encourage members to seek qualified professional help.

8. No spam, advertising or commercial promotion

Do not use the forum primarily to promote products, paid services, websites, coaching, books or other commercial interests.

Relevant resources may be shared where genuinely useful, but repeated self-promotion is not allowed.

9. Keep discussions within the law

Do not post material that is unlawful, threatening, defamatory or intended to facilitate wrongdoing.

10. Moderator decisions are final

Moderators may edit, move, lock or remove posts and may warn, suspend or remove members where necessary to protect the community.

We aim to moderate fairly and proportionately, but the forum does not operate a formal appeals process.

A final note

These rules are here to keep the community safe, useful and humane.

Most moderation problems can be avoided by asking a simple question before posting:

Is this likely to help the conversation, or make it harder for other members to feel safe taking part?
