How Moderation Works
Estranged Parents is a moderated community.
Moderation is intended to keep discussions safe, constructive and useful without making members feel that every disagreement or difficult emotion has to be suppressed.
Supportive does not mean uncritical
This is a community for estranged parents, but we do not assume that parents are always right or that adult children are always wrong.
Members are welcome to express grief, anger, confusion and frustration. They may also sometimes be encouraged to consider another interpretation of events where that could help them understand what has happened or think more clearly about what to do next.
What moderators may do
Moderators may:
We will sometimes intervene before a rule is clearly broken
Not every moderation problem fits neatly into a written rule.
A discussion may technically remain within the rules while becoming increasingly hostile, repetitive, intimidating or dominated by one person.
Moderators may intervene where necessary to protect the overall health of the community.
Posts may be edited rather than removed
Where possible, moderators may remove a name, personal detail or problematic part of a post while leaving the rest of the contribution intact.
If a substantial edit changes the meaning of a post, we will normally make that clear.
Disagreement with moderation
You are welcome to ask politely for clarification if you do not understand a moderation decision.
However, Estranged Parents does not operate a formal appeals process and moderator decisions are final.
Repeatedly reopening a settled moderation decision, attacking moderators or encouraging other members to campaign against a decision may itself result in further moderation.
Moderators are members too
Moderators may take part in ordinary discussions and express personal views.
Where they are acting specifically as a moderator, they should make that reasonably clear.
Reporting a concern
If you see a post that appears to break the rules, reveals sensitive personal information or makes you concerned for another member’s safety, please use the forum’s Report function rather than starting a public argument about it.
A moderator can then review the post and decide what action, if any, is appropriate.
Our aim
Good moderation should be mostly unobtrusive.
The purpose is not to police every difference of opinion, but to maintain a community where people can discuss painful and complicated family situations honestly, respectfully and without the forum becoming an echo chamber or a battleground.

What moderators may do
Moderators may:
- approve or reject posts held for moderation;
- edit or remove identifying or inappropriate material;
- move posts or topics to a more suitable part of the forum;
- split discussions that have moved onto a different subject;
- lock conversations that have become unproductive or hostile;
- contact members privately about their behaviour;
- issue warnings or restrict an account;
- suspend or permanently remove members where necessary.
